If like me you are a fan of the old roller coaster tycoon games you may have been looking forward to the new Jurassic word evolution game. It’s a simple business sim that allows you to build and manage a theme park, create and modify dinosaurs and look after the running of the park.
I played on the Xbox and us couch gamers rarely get these types of sim games, so I was looking forward to this one.
This game looks really good, graphics are top notch and the sound is amazing, straight from the movies giving a great immersive experience. The controls are really good too especially on console, didn’t feel clunky or intrusive.
The aim is to build up your park on 5 islands hoping from one to the next, meeting objectives to unlock the next island. The main focus is growing and keeping dinosaurs happy while maintaining the park and completing contracts from either of the 3 “factions” Security, Science and Entertainment divisions to unlock new items.
Loading up the game you are greeted with that awesome Jurassic park them tune, and surprisingly the real Jeff Goldblum lends his voice to some of the narration as Dr Ian Malcolm (and he only sounds a bit like he phoned it in 😊)
You start the game on the tutorial island and here it shows you how to place structures, dino paddocks, how to get and breed dinosaurs. It also teaches you how to keep you park running and make a profit. If you do that in the tutorial you will then move onto the next island. Each island has a series of tasks that you need to unlock to move onto the next.
To get dinosaurs you send out expeditions for fossils and then extract the DNA from the fossils to improve the dinosaurs genome rating, once over 50% you can then breed that dino. It’s a bit of a grind here, but it’s always fun finding new dinosaurs. Once you have enough DNA to breed a new dinosaur you can tweak things like skin colour, longevity and sharpen teeth for making them more aggressive or to be able to defend themselves against larger carnivores.
The most in-depth part of the game is having to manage the dinosaurs, they all have different land types that they prefer like woodland or grassland and they all have different sensitivity to other dinosaurs. For example some like to be in large groups and others are loners but prefer a wide variety of other species in the same enclosure. Managing this is pretty fun, especially as you have no idea when you a making a new dino what it’s preferences are. It can be a bit of a race once you release it to quickly make it some friends so he doesn’t go crazy, smash the fence down and go running amok your park visitors.
If dinosaurs do get out of their paddocks, they can cause havoc even start eating your park guests! That’s why you can build an asset containment unit for when the crap hits the fan. With this you can send out choppers to tranquilize the loose dinosaurs and transport them back to it enclosure.
Random storms, sabotage and diseases can send dinosaurs into a frenzy so it’s important to have emergency shelters around your park to keep your guests safe. It’s pretty fun opening these up and watching the guests run for there lives into the shelter while being chased by a T-Rex 😊
Overall it’s got some issues, especially the price point but it’s a fun game if not too challenging.
